AVIF vs. WebP: Is the New Image Format Better?

An in-depth comparison of AVIF and WebP formats, detailing compression ratios, color depth, and browser compatibility.

AVIF vs. WebP: Is the New Image Format Better?

Image formats are constantly evolving to deliver better visual quality at smaller file sizes. First came JPEG and PNG, then Google introduced WebP, and now we have AVIF.

Is AVIF actually better than WebP? In this article, we will compare AVIF and WebP across compression efficiency, color representation, rendering speed, and browser support.

What is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a next-generation open standard that encodes images using the AV1 video codec. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media (which includes Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Netflix) to provide the highest compression efficiency of any image format available today.

The Comparison: AVIF vs. WebP

1. Compression Efficiency (File Size)

AVIF is the clear winner here. On average:

  • AVIF files are 20% to 30% smaller than WebP files.
  • AVIF can shrink a JPEG by up to 50% while maintaining comparable quality.

If your primary goal is to minimize payload size and optimize page speed, AVIF is the strongest option.

2. Color Depth & Detail Preservation

  • WebP: Limited to 8-bit color depth, which can sometimes lead to color banding in smooth gradients.
  • AVIF: Supports 10-bit and 12-bit color depths, high dynamic range (HDR), and wide color gamuts. AVIF preserves fine details and smooth gradients far better than WebP.

3. Encoding Speed & Performance

  • WebP: Very fast to encode (convert) and decode (render).
  • AVIF: Highly complex math. Encoding AVIF takes significantly longer than WebP. While browsers render it quickly, converting files to AVIF locally in a browser requires more computational power.

4. Browser Support

  • WebP: Supported by virtually 100% of all modern web browsers.
  • AVIF: Supported by all major modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge), but older legacy browsers may struggle.

The Verdict

  • Use AVIF for high-traffic websites, background heroes, and detailed photography where saving every single kilobyte is critical.
  • Use WebP as a highly reliable, high-compatibility default that still offers massive savings over JPG and PNG.
